General Scorpion Information
Scorpions are arachnids, close relatives of ticks, mites and spiders.

There are approximately 1,300 species of scorpions worldwide, characterized by an elongated body and a segmented tail that is tipped with a venomous stinger.

Scorpions are very common in the Southern an Southwestern States.

Most are not poisonous ,except for two species found in the southwestern states
Scorpions are commonly thought of as desert animals, but in fact, they occur in many other habitats as well, including grasslands and savannahs, deciduous forests, pine forests, rain forest and caves.

Scorpion Appearance

Scorpions have long, slender body iwth a 5-segmented tail that be arched over the back.

Varies between species, but most measure about 2 inches fully grown.

Color:
Can vary widely between yellow, blue, reddish brown, and black.

Most of the scorpions that enter dwellings are not poisonous, their stings like those of bees or wasps.

Striped Back Scorpions
A typical non poisonous scorpion is the common striped Centruroides vittatus, Striped back scorpion.

It has 2 broad, dark bands extending the length of the back, on an otherwise yellowish-brown body.

Bark Scorpions
However, certain species in the desert Southwest can be poisonous.

Centruroides exilicauda , (Bark Scorpion-pale yellow in color)is found over much of the Southwest.
Also known as the bark scorpion, they are pale and small, making them extremely difficult to see.

The venom of this scorpion may produce severe pain and swelling at the site of the sting, numbness, frothing at the mouth, difficulties in breathing (including respiratory paralysis), muscle twitching, and convulsions.

The Bark Scorpion is very venomous, if stung, call your local Poison control center and go to the nearest hospital or personal physician for antivenin treatment.

Death is rare.

Scorpion Habits:
Scorpions are nocturnal, predatory animals that feed on a variety of insects, spiders, centipedes, and other scorpions.

The larger scorpions occasionally feed on vertebrates, such as smaller lizards, snakes, and mice. Prey are located primarily by sensing vibrations.

Although scorpions are equipped with venom to defend themselves, scorpions fall prey to many types of creatures, such as centipedes, tarantulas, insectivorous lizards, birds (especially owls), and mammals (including shrews, grasshopper mice, bats).

Scorpions feed mainly on insects and spiders and can survive without feeding for six months.

During the day scorpions hide under stones, in piles of rocks, in cracks in masonry, in wood piles and under the bark of trees.

Scorpions enter structures seeking water and shelter.

Recommended Measures for Scorpion Control:
1. Remove outdoor harborages e.g. piles of trash, stones, boards, firewood on the ground and the landscape timbers, should be removed.

2. Points of entry into buildings, e.g. siding, windows, doors, pipes and wires, should be sealed.

3. The use of a residual insecticide such as the wettable powders(WP).
Demon WP or Cyper WP should be applied as a 3- to 10-foot band around the perimeter of the structure, into harborage sites, and/or around potential entry points, such as:
around all windows and doors, along baseboards, plumbing, inside closets, and garage and basement areas.

Both Demon WP and Cyper WP are wettable powders, that may leave a visible residue that can be seen against dark surfaces.

The next best alternative would be :

Cyonara 9.7 or Suspend SC.

These products would last just as long and cannot not be seen against dark surfaces. However, wettable powders work better against scorpions.

4. The use of dusts:
Drione Dust or Delta Dust should be used in the attic area if that is source of entry.

Have you ever dropped a hot candle or just tipped a burning candle over? If so then you'll know just how horrible candle wax can be to your carpet. The stuff goes everywhere, and it hardens so quickly that you have just about no time to do anything about it. Once the candle was does harden, there is not much you can do about it, but I do have an easy solution for you. It's a common problem that many people seem to be having, but no one really knows just how easy it is to solve. Let me first say that this solution will involve using a hot iron, so you should be careful at all times. And if you are a child looking to clean your parents carpet before they get home, just wait for them to help you. A little verbal scolding will be better than burning down the house.

You've tried scrubbing, washing, and even scratching, and nothing seems to be working. Well, if you've got a candle wax stain on your carpet, all you need is an iron and a couple sheets of old newspaper. Is that all? It may seem a little old fashioned and even a little strange, but this actually does work. Just give it a try before demising the idea. I had doubts the first time I tried this, but I was amazed by how fast and affective it was. I was playing around with a candle in one of my friend's room, when I accidentally dropped the candle. Wax went everywhere, and I was left to clean up the mess, so I can say that I've experienced this solution myself.

The first thing you'll want to do is heat your iron up, just as if you were going to iron a regular shirt. Now remember that the iron will be hot, so you should always be careful when using one. Once it's warmed up, you should find a few sheets of old newspaper and place them on the spot with the stain. Place a few sheets around the stain too which will prevent you from burning other materials around you. Now this may seem simple, but all you have to do is iron the sheets of paper. This method of cleaning can sound strange, but as you do this you will start to notice that the stain will be disappearing.

As you iron the sheets of newspaper, you should start to notice that the wax is absorbing into the sheets of paper which is a good sign. This will look like little spots of water or grease. Once you've seen these little spots of grease, you know the wax is coming out of your carpet.

Afterwards, don't forget to turn the iron off because you don't want to burn down the house. And be careful when you're doing this to your carpet, because accidents are known to happen. Never try to use a lighter or any other flammable item to take the stain out either: you'll just end up burning your carpet instead of cleaning it.

So the next time one of your friends knock down that candle sending wax everywhere, you'll know just what to do about it. Whip out that iron and a few sheets of old newspaper, and start that cleaning.

Sometimes air conditioners develop more serious conditions and need to be cleaned thoroughly. Mold can develop around the outside of the unit, or vegetation may migrate towards the outside housing. Use a commercial mold killer or call a professional appliance repairman to reach the unreachable. Keep mosses, ferns and ivy trimmed back from the outside of the unit. Occasionally, the drain that usually allows excess water to escape will become clogged with debris. If you hear water gurgling around the system, you may need to vacuum out this dirty water and unplug the drain. Remove the front cover and unplug the unit from the wall. Use a wet/dry vacuum with a narrow crevice attachment to draw up as much standing water as possible. Grab a flashlight and look for any debris, which may be clogging the drainage pan. If you can't see a drainage area, watch where the water wants to collect and investigate that area. Major blockages may have to be opened by professionals. Examine your carpeting for any signs of water damage, which may be a sign that the air conditioner's drainage system is not working.
